Meet Jessica the Maker & Creator behind Jessica Rykers Creative!
Are you a Maker, Creator, Mover or Shaker?
I would call myself a maker and creator! I make and create all things typography, focusing on calligraphy prints.
How did your Business start?
My business started when I studied graphic design – but then took the direction of calligraphy when I took it up as a hobby! I’ve always loved watching videos of people writing with brush pens and wondered how hard it would be? So I decided to do an online calligraphy course and after a lot of patience, I finally got it! I then started making prints for myself and thought why not share my work with others! And its all grown from there…
What is the best part about running a Small Business?
The best part of my work is making custom prints for people. Prints purchased for gifts or simply just to give to a love one to tell them you love them. I’ve always been a sucker for homewares, but getting the chance to make them myself and customise them for my clients is so satisfying.
What is the biggest challenge you face with running a Small Business?
I work full-time as well as all of my calligraphy work, so for me definitely time management!
One word to describe your Business?
Creative
Who or what inspires you?
When I started learning calligraphy, I spent a lot of time looking at other calligraphers work searching for inspiration. So really, a collective of them all. Everyone has their own style and its awesome to explore whats out there.
Favourite WA holiday destination?
I haven’t had too much opportunity to travel around WA as yet – but going up to Broome is on the top of my list!
Tea or Coffee?
Coffee, always coffee!
Morning or Night person?
Definitely a night owl!
Who’s your favourite Girl Boss?
Gemma O’Brien is my absolute favourite typographer – find her under the name ‘MrsEaves’ you won’t regret it!
Where to next for your Business?
I would love to get my writing onto more tactile items like bags or cushions (I also really love cushions)!!! Watch this space!
